Mr Douglas was hauled before a court 27 miles away from his family who had no idea what had happened to him. He was fined 87 Euros (£72) and given a 20-day prison sentence, suspended for three years. His £120 metal detector was seized and not returned to him.

She went online and found Darryl Mansfield, a retired lawyer for the state attorney general's office who has made a hobby of metal-detecting for more than 20 years. Mansfield, a Sacramento resident, is a member of the Ring Finders Metal Detecting Service Inc., an online directory of metal-detecting specialists.

Lee Wiese said the ring he plucked from the sand was one of more than a dozen rings he and fellow members of the Sacramento Valley Detecting Buffs, a metal detecting club, discovered during a recent weekend outing.
