January 5, 2012 Meeting Minutes by Secretary Barbara Anderton Plus More:

Our new president Bob Harrison opened the Thursday meeting promptly at 7:30 welcoming us to the New Year. All board members new and old were introduced, including John Duffy our newly volunteered Newsletter editor. Bob also mentioned that SVDB is now on Facebook and to please check it out and join us. Day in the Park oldest coin prizes were handed out: Marvin Weise…oldest coin on 1st Sunday hunt John Duffy…1934 silver quarter.

SVDB member John Hainlen discussed how he and another member spent 2-3 hour filling in holes at San Juan High School where another hunter and foolishly left wide open and trash strewn about. We discussed the importance of filling all holes and removing your trash from the hunted fields. If this process is ignored it could ruin this great hobby of metal detecting for us all. He was given a round of applause and Bob Harrison gave John a silver quarter.

The introduced guests were: Charlie Smith…he had no detector, Carl…..he has a detector just hasn’t used it yet…looking for some guidance. Dick Swanson….saw us in Foresthill and wanted to visit. Odell Landers…been a detectorist since 1978.  Bob carried on John’s tradition of telling a joke before the meeting commenced.

Presidential comments…Bob laid out a few thoughts he has for our club in 2012: Planning a Sees Candy fundraiser for Easter: Discussing the cost of gold and silver coins and we voted on which coins he was to purchase in the future, “shiny” or untouched. The crowd overwhelmingly wants the coins untouched; Plans on improving hunts for us.

Secretary’s report : Barbara Anderton mentioned purchasing miscellaneous testing equipment such as a scale, gold tester and diamond tester for members to have use of at each meeting.

Library report from Tom Schweppe…Tom has a geologist friend who would like to come and speak to the club re. things gold related. There was a lot of enthusiasm for this.

Lee Wiese Report:  Nothing from the Placer County sheriffs team this month.  Large hunt in Las Vegas Jan. 21st. Arizona news: Detectorists went to the parks and Recreation in McFendale to plead their case and ask them to open up detecting in this town. They managed to get acceptance. CA Dept. of Fish and Game is looking for outreach volunteers that would be required to attend an 80 hour conservation course ..call 916-358-1948

Saturday Hunts volunteer sheet was up front. Bob Harrison will organize the hunts and several people signed up. The hunts will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month.   Bob decided the Saturday hunts will be held in West Sacramento or Davis.  People interested in joining the hunt should meet at 8am at Denny's on 4025 Lake Road in West Sacramento.  It is off I-80 on Exit 81 (westbound) near Enterprise Blvd. The first hunt will be on January 28th.

Good News: PLP ( Public Land for the People) won a court battle to allow dredging $ to be collected. Google Western Mining Assoc. Ban on dredging still exists.

Membership drawing was won by Sharon Anderson.  Vince Migliore was mentioned as a local author publishing several books for beginners on metal detecting. Tonights raffle brought in $830 and Charlotte Key won the grand prize of tonight’s 1/10 ounce gold coin.

Huntmaster Cyndy Johnston emailed the next planned hunt information.  It will be held on March 10th at 9:am  The location will be decided at the February 2nd meeting.

An Unbelievable Find was displayed in the January Show & Tell.  There were several outstanding finds displayed, but one was truly a standout.  You had to be there to see it.  Just another reason to attend our SVDB meetings.
